► What’s Happening: Boise State is off to San Jose, Calif., for the Santa Clara Invitational being held Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-21, at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club. This is the fourth of five events for the Broncos this fall.

► The Broncos’ Tournament Roster: Representing Boise State this week in San Jose are: starting in the number one position is senior Scott Loewen averaging 73.3 strokes per round (spr) through the first three tournaments, followed by freshman Blake Brown (73.9 spr), junior Robbie Richards (74.3 spr), freshman Ahmed Amlani will start in the number four position in the first event of his collegiate career, and rounding out the squad is junior John Baranco (75.2 spr).

► The Tournament: The 54-hole tournament is hosted by Santa Clara University and will feature 10 collegiate teams with approximately 50 individuals competing. The format calls for three rounds played over two days. It will begin with the first two rounds on Monday and finish with the final round on Tuesday.

► The Course: The competition is being held at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Calif. For this tournament the course is a par 71 and spans 6,926 yards. For more information on the course checkout the club’s website: www.scvcc.com.

► The Field: The teams competing against the Broncos this week are: Santa Clara University from the West Coast Conference; Big Sky Conference member Sacramento State; Kansas State University from the Big 12 Conference; The University of British Columbia from Canada; South Dakota State University from the Summitt League; as well as, the Academy of the Arts, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State San Marcos, and Loyola (Md.).

 

Looking at the Broncos...

What’s Happened So far: After three tournaments, the Broncos enter the competition on Monday with a 20-22-1 overall record and a 1-4-1 mark versus Western Athletic Conference teams. Most recently, the Broncos played in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Springs, Calif., on Oct. 4-5 where they placed 12th out of 19 teams. Prior to that, Boise State placed eighth at the Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore., Sept. 22-23. The 2008 WAC runners-up opened the season placing fifth out of 17 teams at the Ron Moore Invitational in Denver, Colo., Sept. 15-16.

The Broncos as a team: To date, the team is averaging 877.7 strokes per tournament which is a 14-over-par based on a 72 par course, the per round average is 292.6.

Who to watch: Four Broncos have played in all four tournaments to date, including Monday’s Santa Clara Invitational. Leading the group of four is Senior Scott Loewen with a team-best 73.3 strokes per round. Freshman Blake Brown is second on the year at 73.9 spr., followed by juniors Robbie Richards at 74.3 and John Baranco at 75.2 spr.

Down the Road: Besides this week’s Santa Clara Invitational in San Jose, Calif., the Broncos have one more tournament scheduled for this fall before the winter break, six are on the slate for next spring. Next up is the Kauai Collegiate Invitational in Hawaii, hosted by the University of Hawaii Nov. 3-5.
