Brown places 10th while Spiewak finishes 13th.


LAYTON, Utah (10/12/2010) - Boise State’s Blake Brown and Scott Spiewak finished in the top-13 on the final day of the Purple and Red Invitational Tuesday afternoon in Layton, Utah. Brown finished the two-day event with a 2-under 214 to finish tied for 10th out of 96, while Spiewak ended at 1-under 215 to tie for 13th. The Broncos finished with a season-best finish at fifth-place after tallying a 4-over 292 on today’s final 18 at Valley View Golf Club giving them a three-round total of 4-over 868.

Sacramento State rallied this afternoon with an even-par 288 to pull past Washington State for the team title with a 7-under 857. The Cougars slipped today carding a 11-over 299 to fall one stroke short of tying Sac State with a 6-under 858. Boise State finished the tournament with three solid rounds in Utah carding scores of 291 (+3), 285 (-3) and today’s 4-over 292.

Sacramento State swept the top-two places on the individual leaderboard led by Jake Johnson who won the medalist honors with a 12-under 204, followed by Grant Rappleye with a 7-under 209.

Boise State was led by junior Blake Brown who tallied a 2-under 70 this afternoon giving him a tournament total of 2-under 214 as he moved up 11 positions from 21st to finish in a three-way tie for 10th-place. Brown’s 10th-place finish was his top result of the fall while tying his best tournament score. His 2-under 70s during the second and third rounds are a new season low.

Scott Spiewak recorded his best tournament of the fall since transferring to Boise State over the summer. He shot 4-over 76 this afternoon but preceded that with two below-par rounds yesterday. The final score of 1-under 215 and a 13th-place finish are both new career marks for the junior from Prescott, Ariz.

The third ranking Bronco at the event was junior Taylor Porter playing in his first tournament for Boise State after transferring from Spokane Community College this summer. The native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, carded a 2-under 70 during today’s session. He finished the event at 2-over 218 to tie for 24th.

Taeksoo Kim finished with a 5-over 221 to tie for 34th overall. The sophomore was steady recording scores of 73 (+1), 72 (E) and 76 (+4). Clayton Kosanovich rounded out the team scoring on Tuesday firing a 6-over 78 to finish at 228 (+12). Competing as an individual was sophomore Charlie Marusiak who finished with a career-best three-round total of 7-over 223. He shot a season-low 73 (+1) on the final 18 this afternoon.

Boise State has one tournament remaining on its fall schedule Oct. 25-26 when the Broncos travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State University.
