Men's Golf in Fifth-Place at Purple and Red Invitational
Spiewak tied for fifth.

LAYTON, Utah (10/11/2010) - Scott Spiewak carded a two-round score of 5-under 139 to lead Boise State at the Purple and Red Invitational in Layton, Utah, Monday afternoon. The Broncos finished the day at even-par 576 to find themselves in fifth-place out of 16 teams at the tournament being co-hosted by Weber State University and the University of Utah at Valley View Golf Club.

Washington State University has pulled out to a commanding 8-stroke lead after 36 holes on Monday recording a 17-under 559. The University of Portland sits in second-place at 9-under 567.

Boise State shot two solid rounds as a team carding a 3-over 291 on the first 18 holes followed by a 3-under 285 during the afternoon session. The Broncos will start Tuesday’s final round 17 strokes out of first and nine out of second place.

Spiewak led Boise State on the first day with two back-to-back sub-par rounds shooting a 2-under 70 in the first round followed by a 3-under 69 on the second 18. The junior college transfer from South Mountain Community College in Arizona has now recorded a team-best three rounds in the 60s this season.  

Sacramento State’s Jake Johnson has the lead after two rounds firing a 9-under 135 on Monday. He has a three-stroke lead over a pack of three golfers tied for second.

Blake Brown turned in the second-best two round score for Boise State at the tournament with a even-par 144. The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., shot 2-over 74 on the first 18 holes then shaved four strokes off during the second round for a 2-under 70. He will start the final round tied for 21st.

Close behind is Taeksoo Kim who finished Monday at 1-over 145, tied for 29th. The sophomore from Hawaii carded a 1-over 73 followed by an even-par 72.

Clayton Kosanovich rounded out the team scoring for Boise State with a 6-over 150. The sophomore recorded scores of 2-over 74 and 4-over 76, respectively.

Boise State brought six golfers to this event with Charlie Marusiak competing as an individual. The redshirt-sophomore from Phoenix was steady over today’s rounds tallying 3-over 75s during both sessions to finish tied with Kosanovich at 150 (+6).  

The final round will be staged Tuesday morning starting by tee times at 8:00 a.m.
