Men's Golf to Compete in Purple and Red Invitational at Layton, Utah...

Boise State University’s men’s golf team returns to action this coming week when the Broncos participate in the Purple and Red Invitational at Valley View Golf Club in Layton, Utah, Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 11-12. This tournament is being hosted by Weber State University and the University of Utah and features a 16-team field. This is the third of four competitions for the Broncos this fall.
► What Has Happened Recently
Boise State placed 12th at the Santa Clara University Cabo Collegiate Oct. 2-4 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Broncos carded a three-round total of 49-over 913. Sophomore Clayton Kosanovich led Boise State with a 9-over 225 to finish 31st overall. Prior to that the Broncos took eight out of 16 teams at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate Sept. 13-14.
► About The Purple and Red Invitational
This is the first time since fall of 2007 that the Broncos have participated in the Purple and Red Invitational. Boise State’s last tournament team title came at this event in 2007 when the Broncos carded a 36-hole total of 567 (-9) to beat Utah by one stroke for the championship. Boise State alum and 2010 PGA Tour member Troy Merritt won the individual title with a 10-under 134 to out pace Wyoming’s Mike May by three strokes. Boise State alums John Baranco and Matt Hastings tied for 15th at 1-under 143.
► Format For the Purple and Red Invitational
The squad format for this event features the typical five-man teams, top-four scores per round count towards team total. The competition format for this tournament calls for three rounds, 54 holes, of stroke play staged over two days, Oct. 11-12. The action begins Monday with 36 continuous holes, followed by the final 18 on Tuesday. Monday begins with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. (Mountain), while the final round will feature tee times off holes 1 and 10, beginning at 8:10 a.m.
► The Host Course
The host facility for this event is Valley View Golf Club in Layton, Utah. For this competition the club will feature a competition course that spans 7,258 yards for a par-72. This William Hull original design was built in 1975. Using the natural terrain of the Wasatch Mountain foot hills the course offers many elevation changes and spectacular views. This traditional style course is year round home to many deer and other wildlife. Tree lined bluegrass and rye fairways challenge players of all skill levels.
► The Team Field
The Purple and Red Invitational features 15 teams from NCAA Division I schools and one Canadian squad. Boise State and Utah State will represent the Western Athletic Conference at this event. The remaining 14 schools include the host schools Weber State and Utah, as well as, Air Force, Arkansas-Little Rock, British Columbia, Cal Poly, UC Riverside, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Portland, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, and Washington State. There will be over 80 individuals competing for the team and individual titles.
► Boise State’s Tournament Roster
Boise State will travel six players to the Purple and Red Invitational this coming week. Competing for the team total will be Clayton Kosanovich, Scott Spiewak, Blake Brown, Taeksoo Kim and Taylor Porter. Charlie Marusiak with compete as an individual at this event.
No. 1 Position: Clayton Kosanovich - The sophomore has been the most consistent Bronco this fall and is coming off his top-two career performances. He set a new career mark at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate, Sept. 13-14, firing an 8-over 224, then just missed that with a 9-over 225 at the SCU Cabo Collegiate Oct. 2-4. This year he is averaging 74.8 strokes per round (spr).
No. 2 Position: Scott Spiewak - The JC transfer will start in the second roster slot. He has recorded the top-two individual rounds on the team with two 4-under 68s but is looking for consistency. Through two competitions he is averaging 75.2 spr after tallying a 1-over-par 217 at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate followed by a 18-over 234 in Cabo, Oct. 2-4.
No. 3 Position: Blake Brown - The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., enters the Purple and Red with the top average on the team at 74.2 strokes per round. He opened the year with a solid outing at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate tying for 16th with a 2-under 214, but struggled a bit at the SCU Cabo Collegiate with a 15-over 231.
No. 4 Position: Taeksoo Kim - The sophomore from Wailuku, Hawaii, will open at the fourth position after firing a 19-over 235 at the SCU Cabo Collegiate, his first event of the fall. He currently averages 78.3 spr on the year, however, his career average is 75.2.
No. 5 Position: Taylor Porter - Porter, a native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, is playing in his first competition as a Bronco after transferring from the Community Colleges of Spokane.
Individual: Charlie Marusiak - The sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz., will be competing as an individual at the Purple and Red. His scores will not count towards the team total. Marusiak has competed in one tournament this fall recording a 13-over 229 at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate. He currently averages 76.3 spr.
