District VII Shootout on Tap For the Broncos

What’s Happening   The Boise State University men’s golf team will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., Oct.  9through Oct. 10, to compete in the District VII Shootout, hosted by the University of Hawaii


The Teams In addition to Boise State, the 16-team field will include Western Athletic Conference rivals Nevada, Idaho and host school Hawaii as well as San Diego State, Weber State, Utah, Utah Valley State, Southern Utah, Denver, Colorado State, Wyoming, UTEP, Air Force, Hawaii-Hilo and UNLV. 


A good showing in head-to-head competition against teams in Boise State’s district goes a long way to determining if the Broncos will be chosen to participate in NCAA postseason play.


Last Time Out At the Wolf Pack Classic, hosted by the University of Nevada, the Broncos finished with a 873 (+9) to capture sixth place in the 18-team tournament field.


The Players Boise State will be sending to five golfers to the Shootout including Nick Travers, Troy Merritt, Matt Hastings, Chris Byrne and Shawn Tonkin.


In the two tournaments Travers has participated in this season he has captured two top three finishes.  The senior from Boise, Idaho, captured the individual title of the Vandal Classis by shooting an 8-under, 205.  He won his individual title of his career by four strokes over his nearest competitor.  The following week in the Wolf Pack Classic Travers tied for third after shooting a 210 (-6). 


Troy Merritt has also recorded two top 15 finishes this season. He finished the Purple and Red Invitational in a tie for 14th, with a score of 216 (+3). At the Vandal Classic, Merritt again finished in 14th place when he again posted a 216 (E).


The Broncos’ other top 20 finish this season came from Matt Hastings, who finished tied for 15th at the Purple and Red Invitational with a 1-over par, 217.
