Spiewak fires a 4-under 68 on Monday.

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (10/4/2010) - After struggling the first two days at Santa Clara University’s Cabo Collegiate, Boise State’s men’s golf team rallied with its top round of the tournament carding a 4-over 292 during the final session at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Even with the solid round on Monday the Broncos placed 12th overall with a final tally of 49-over-par 913. Leading Boise State today was Scott Spiewak with a 4-under 68 followed by Blake Brown’s 1-over 73.

The University of Arkansas held onto its second-round lead firing an 11-under 277 this afternoon to take home the team title with a three-round score of 10-under 854. The Razorbacks won the championship by 22 strokes over second-place University of Houston who finished at 12-over 876.

The Broncos shaved 16 strokes off yesterday’s second round total of 308, tallying a 4-over 292 this afternoon. It was the best-round of the three-day tournament for Boise State. The Broncos managed to make up ground on the team leaderboard but still finished 12th out of 12 teams, falling two stroke short of jumping past the University of Pacific for 11th.

On the individual side of the event, Arkansas’ Jamie Marshall won the medalist honors with a 5-under 211 followed by teammate Austin Cook who finished in a three-way tie for second with a 4-under 212.

Leading the way for Boise State at the SCU Cabo Collegiate was sophomore Clayton Kosanovich who was consistent over the three days to record scores of 73-76-76 for a final score of 9-over 225, good for 31st place.

Blake Brown’s 1-over 73 moved the junior into second place on the team roster with a final mark of 15-over 231 to tie for 45th overall.

Spiewak’s 4-under 68 was by far his best round of the competition after struggling on the first two days. The junior finished with a 18-over 234 to tie for 54th.

After a poor first day, Taeksoo Kim rebounded with two decent rounds to close the SCU Cabo Collegiate. He shot a 2-over 74 yesterday and followed that with a 3-over 75 today to finish with a three-round tally of 235 (+19).

Senior Chris Byrne rounded out the scoring for Boise State with a final score of 25-over 241 (76-79-86).

The Santa Clara University Cabo Collegiate was the second event for the Broncos this year. Next up, the Ameriprise Financial Purple and Red Invitational Oct. 11-12 in Layton, Utah. Boise State’s last tournament team title came at this event in 2007.
