Boise State Struggles on Opening Day of Santa Clara Cabo Collegiate

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (10/2/2010) - Clayton Kosanovich fired a 2-over 73 this afternoon to lead Boise State University’s men’s golf team on the opening day of the Santa Clara University Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Unfortunately the Broncos struggled overall tallying a team score of 25-over 313 finding themselves in 12th-place out of 12 teams.

The University of Houston leads the competition by five-strokes over UC Irvine after recording a 2-over-par 290 today, the Anteaters shot 7-over 295. The Broncos are in a group at the back of the pack and are only six strokes out of seventh. However, Boise State will open the second day of three at the SCU Cabo Collegiate 23-strokes out of first place.

On the individual side of the tournament the Broncos were led by Kosanovich who turned in a solid effort with a 2-over 73 during the first round to finish in a five-way tie for eighth. The sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., recorded five birdies on the first 18 holes at the event. Kosanovich is five-strokes out of first place where UC Irvine’s Bryan Harris holds a slim one-stroke lead over Houston’s Matt Eschenburg after carding a 4-under 68 this afternoon.

Chris Byrne recorded the second-best score for Boise State on Saturday with a 4-over 76, good for a 10-way tie for 22nd. Blake Brown was third on the squad with a 7-over 79 and is in a five-way tie for 40th.

Rounding out the day for Boise State were Scott Spiewak who shot 13-over 85, followed by Taeksoo Kim with a 14-over 86.

The Santa Clara Cabo Collegiate will continue over the next two days with the second round being staged Sunday. It is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. (Mountain) by shotgun start.
