Boise State Golf Teams Sit in Seventh Place at Giustina Memorial Classic After Day One...

Broncos are in seventh-place in all three team competitions.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (9/28/2009) - Boise State’s golf teams are in seventh place following the first 36 holes of the Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore. The men and women fired a combined score of 1,224 (+72) Monday during the first two rounds of Oregon State University’s annual tournament. Leading the way for the men’s team is sophomore Blake Brown who carded an even-par 144 to finish the day in a four-way tie for 15th. Meanwhile, Michelle Gooding tallied the best two-round score for the women with a 13-over-par 157.

The Boise State women recorded scores of 312 (+24) in the morning session and a 320 (+32) during the afternoon to complete the day with a 632 (+56) and in seventh-place on the women’s side of the event. They will begin Tuesday 34 strokes behind the University of Oregon in first-place and seven back of Cal Poly in sixth.

Sophomore Michelle Gooding led the women’s team during the first two rounds turning in scores of 78 (+6) and 79 (+7) for a first day total of 13-over 157. She ended the two rounds in a three-way tie for 18th. Senior Iris Ocariza was close behind tallying an 14-over-par 158 on the day on scores of 78 (+6) and 80 (+8) to find herself in a five-way tie for 21st.

Rounding out the women’s roster for the Broncos was freshman Jennifer Henningsson who had two rounds of eight-over 80 for a total of 160 (+16) to place in a three-way tie for 29th. Freshman Hayley Young completed the two rounds with a four-over 76 and a 13-over 85 finishing with a 161 (+17) for sole possession of 32nd place. The final Bronco was freshman Lori Harper with a 21-over 165 on scores of 84 (+12) and 81 (+9).

The men’s team also finds itself in seventh-place after the first two rounds of the Giustina Memorial Classic recording scores of three-over 291 in the first session and a 13-over 301 in the afternoon. They will begin the final round Tuesday morning 31-strokes out of first-place Washington State University and six strokes behind Cal Poly in fifth.

Blake Brown continues to lead Boise State’s men’s team this season. After winning the previous tournament he opened the second competition today by carding two even-par rounds of 72 finishing with a 144 (E) and tied with three others for 15th. He will begin tomorrow’s final 18 holes eight-strokes back of the leader Trent Sanders of Washington State who fired a 138 (-8).

Senior Robbie Richards placed tied for fourth at last year’s Classic, this year he finds himself tied for 22nd with a two-over-par 146.  He was followed by senior John Baranco who carded a 72 (E) and 80 (+8) for  a total of eight-over 152. Freshman Taeksoo Kim competing in his first collegiate competition of his career is tied with Richards and two others for 34th-place after recording rounds of 77 (+5) and 75 (+3). Completing the day for Boise State was junior Chris Byrne who turned in scores of 77 (+5) and 78 (+6) for a 11-over 155, tied for 43rd.

Tomorrow’s competition begins at 9:00 a.m. (Mountain) time at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.
