Brown's victory is his first and the first for Boise State since Troy Merritt won the 2008 WAC championship.
PULLMAN, Washington (9/15/2009) - Boise State sophomore Blake Brown carded a career-best six-under 66 as he rallied from fifth place yesterday to tie for the Palouse Collegiate individual title with a tournament score of 208 (-8). Boise State finished the event in eighth place overall out of 12 teams competing at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course on the Washington State University campus in Pullman. Brown’s victory is the first for Boise State since former Bronco Troy Merritt won the 2008 Western Athletic Conference championship.
The Broncos entered the final round in eighth place following yesterday’s two-round score of 598 (+22). They had hoped to improve on that standing this morning but the team as a whole struggled turning in a third-round score of 12-over-par 300 giving them a final tournament tally of 898 (+34). Even though the final result was not what they had wanted in their season opener, today’s score was good enough to hold off Gonzaga (904, +40), Community Colleges of Spokane (915, +51), Seattle (920, +56) and Lewis-Clark State (942, +78). Washington State won their own tournament with a final score of nine-over 873.
Brown improved his score with each round he played in Pullman this week. He turned in a 73 (+1) in the first, a 69 (-3) in the second round, and finally a career-best 66 (-6) in the final session this morning. The win at the Palouse Collegiate marks his first-ever collegiate victory. The sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., finished tied with Washington State’s Kevin Tucker for the individual title, the duo finished three strokes better than third place Austin Graham of UC Davis. Brown’s previous best finish was a third place result at the Kauai Collegiate Invite at Hawaii on Nov. 5 of last year.
Seniors Robbie Richards and John Baranco finished the tournament in 41st and 49th respectively. Richards fired a five-over 77 this morning for a final tournament total of 228 (+12) ending up in a four-way tie for 41st. Meanwhile, Baranco turned in a third-round tally of 81 (+9) to finish the event with a 15-over 231 finishing in a six-way tie for 49th.
Junior Chris Byrne recorded a seven-over-par 79 today to place 61st overall with a 18-over 234. Senior Drew Surmeier rounded out the Bronco roster with a 22-over 238.
The inaugural Palouse Collegiate was the season opener for Boise State who finished with a 4-7 record at the event. The Broncos now have a week off before their next competition on Sept. 28-29 at the Giustina Memorial Invitational in Corvallis, Ore., hosted by Oregon State University.
