Blake Brown in Fifth Place After Two Rounds at the Palouse Collegiate, Team Sits in Eighth...
PULLMAN, Washington (9/14/2009) - Boise State sophomore Blake Brown fired a two-under-par 142 to lead the Broncos after two rounds at the Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., on Monday. It is the season opener for the Boise State men’s golf team who finds itself in eighth place out of 12 teams after carding a two round total of 598, plus 22. The Broncos will enter tomorrow’s final round 19 strokes behind the leading Sacramento State Hornets who turned in a three-over-par 579. 

Boise State carded a first round score of nine-over-par 297 to enter the second round tied with Weber State for seventh place. However, the Broncos slipped a bit in the afternoon session turning in a 13-over-par 301 to move down to eighth place. Boise State will begin the final round 19 strokes out of first place but only seven strokes out of fifth as they attempt to move up the standings Tuesday morning.

Brown tallied a one-over-par 73 during the first round to find himself in a tie for 21st after the morning session. By the time the afternoon round was completed he had moved up 16 positions to take over sole possession of fifth place by firing a three-under-par 69 to give him a first day total of two-under 142.

Seniors John Baranco and Robbie Richards finished the first round in a 13-way tie for eighth place with even-par 72s. Unfortunately, the duo struggled in the second round falling out of the top-20 by the end of the day.  Baranco concluded the second round in a five-way tie for 28th after carding a six-over 78 in the afternoon for a two-round total of 150 (+6). Richards recorded a two-round total of 151 (+7) to finish day one in an eight-way tie for 33rd, he had a seven-over 79 in the second round.

Rounding out the first day of the Palouse Collegiate for Boise State were junior Chris Byrne with a two-round total of 155 (+11) and senior Drew Surmeier with a 16-over 160.

The Palouse Collegiate continues Tuesday morning with the competition beginning at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) at Washington State University’s Palouse Ridge Golf Course.
