BEND, Ore. - Boise State freshman Brian Humphreys moved one step closer to qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Open Tuesday, finishing tied for fifth at 2-under (70) at the 2017 U.S. Open Local Qualifier on the par-72 Nicklaus Course at Pronghorn Resort in Bend, Ore.

The top six finishers at Tuesday's local qualifier move on to the 36-hole sectional qualifier, set for June 5 at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club in Lakewood, Wash. Humphreys was one of three amateurs to qualify for sectionals Tuesday, along with Arthur Kim and Riley Elmes, who each tied professional Daniel Miernicki at 3-under. Zach Foushee topped the field at 4-under, while Humphreys tied with Charlie Kern for fifth, claiming the final sectional qualifying spots.

Sophomore Connor Bell was also in qualifying action Tuesday, playing at the local qualifier on Yocha DeHe Golf Course in Brooks, Calif. There, Bell carded an even-par 72, finishing just two strokes back of the qualifying group.

Humphreys will return to collegiate competition next Monday-Wednesday (May 15-17), competing at the NCAA Regional at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. The Washougal, Wash., native will need to finish as the top individual among golfers whose teams do not finish in the top five at Stanford in order to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
