Boise State Struggles on First Day of WAC Championship

HENDERSON, Nev. (5/2/2011) - The Broncos struggled on the opening day of the Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship tallying a 309 (+21) at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.  Fresno State leads the team competition with a even-par 288 during Monday’s round. Boise State University sophomore Taeksoo Kim recorded a solid round of 1-over 73 to finish the first day tied for ninth-place.

The Fresno State Bulldogs hold a slim one-stroke lead over three-time defending champion New Mexico State University who shot 1-over-par 289, San Jose State University is third at 5-over 293. The Broncos opened the three-day competition in last place after having one of its golfers disqualified. Boise State is one stroke behind the University of Hawai’i who recorded a 20-over 308.

On the individual side of the competition the University of Idaho’s Damian Telles holds a two-stroke lead carding a 6-under 66 this afternoon. Bryan Hogan of Fresno State sits in second-place at 4-under 68.

Boise State was led on day one by Taeksoo Kim who fired a solid 1-over-par 73. The Hawaii native is currently in a five-way tie for fifth-place, eight strokes out of first.

Clayton Kosanovich recorded the second-best round for the Broncos with a 5-over 77, tied for 29th. Taylor Porter was a stroke back for Boise State tallying a 6-over 68, followed by Charlie Marusiak with a 9-over 81. Unfortunately, junior Scott Spiewak was disqualified for a rules violation.

Boise State will be among the first group to open day two at the WAC championship and will be paired with Hawai’i and Utah State University. The round will begin by tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain). Live scoring is available at www.WACSport.com.
