Broncos Move Into Second Place at WAC Championships

RENO, Nev. The Boise State University men’s golf team set a school-record, Tuesday, by shooting a 9-under 279 in the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships to move into sole possession of second place.

The 279 (-9) posted by the team in round two bested the previous school-record for a low-round at a conference championship by 10 strokes in relation to par. The team also set the school-record for a low-round at a conference tournament with the 279 (-9) which topped the previous low of 285 (+1) set at the 2004 WAC Championships.

The Broncos were lead by four golfers all of whom rank among the top 15 in scoring through two rounds.

Chris Byrne stands tied for fourth place with a 5-under, 139 after two rounds. He opened the day with an eagle on the first hole, followed by three bogies before closing out the day with another eagle on the 18th hole. Overall he played even-par on the front-nine and 1-under on the back-nine, to post a 71 (-1) Tuesday.

John Baranco recorded a 73 (+1) in the second round to move into a tie for 10th place with a 3-under 141. This was the eighth consecutive round Baranco has registered a score no worse than 1-over par. He posted three birdies, two bogies and one double bogey to shoot 1-over for the day. Baranco is tied for the team-lead with nine holes birdied at the WAC Championships.

Troy Merritt set the school-record for a low-round at a conference championship with his 6-under, 66. The record had previously been shared by three Broncos including Byrne and Baranco who matched the school-record of 68 in the first round of the 2007 WAC Championships. Merritt’s 66 also matched the low-round at this season’s conference championships. This is the 11th round this season Merritt has recorded a score in the 60s. Through two rounds he sits tied for 12th place with a 142 (-2). In the second round he posted seven birdies to only one bogey.

Matt Hastings stands tied for 14th place with a 143 (-1).  He set a personal-best round at the conference championship by firing a 3-under, 69 in the second. He topped his previous low of 72 (E) which he set at the 2005 WAC Championships. Hastings posted three birdies, including birdying the first two holes, and one bogey to remain 2-under through the front-nine. On the back-nine Hastings avoided all bogey and registered one birdie to post a 1-under.

Robbie Richards is in 41st place with a 153 (+9). He could not find his stroke today as he registered six bogies to his one birdie which he achieved on the first hole. He did close out strong as he pared is final three holes.

The WAC Championships will continue with the final round of play Wednesday, May 2, at the Hidden Valley Country Club with tee times beginning at 9:00 a.m.
