Broncos Move Up Into Eighth at WAC Championship?
Richards rallies to move up 15 places into tie for 19th.
HENDERSON, Nevada (4/28/09) Boise State moved past the University of Hawaii this afternoon into eighth place after firing a 317 (+29) during the second round at the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship in Henderson, Nev. The Broncos started the day in ninth but managed to pass the Rainbow Warriors and open a nine-stroke margin between them and the UH.
At the end of the day all nine teams struggled during round two compared to yesterday’s results. New Mexico State remains in front with a 7-over 583, followed by Fresno State at 587 (+11) and Idaho at 589 (+13). Boise State did make up some ground on the teams directly in front of them, but fell further behind the leaders. The Broncos carded a 317 giving them a two-day total of 624 (+48).
Robbie Richards led Boise State today tallying a 1-over 73. A solid improvement from yesterday as he cut five strokes off his first round total giving him a tournament score of 151 (+7) moving him to the top of the Bronco roster and into a tie for 19th at the competition. The junior from Australia was consistent during the second round recording an even-par on the front nine and a 1-over on the second half, as well as, a team-best 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys.
The rest of the squad struggled today battling high winds as they tried to get back into the race for the title. Scott Loewen turned in the second-best result of the day with a 6-over 78. That gives him a two-day total of 153 (+9) and up two spots into 23rd-place overall.
Blake Brown opened strong firing an even-par 36 on the front nine before he began to struggle down the stretch on the back nine where he was 13-over giving him a 85 today. His tournament score now stands at 159 (+15) as he moves down into 36th place.
John Baranco was fourth this afternoon for the Broncos carding an 18-hole score of 81 (+9). The junior from Boise was 3-over on the front nine and 6-over on the back side. Baranco’s two-round score is 161 (+17) putting him in a tie for 38th.
Kevin Tarango rounded out the day for Boise State firing a 16-over 88. The senior now has a total of 170 (+26).
Boise State will be in the first group that ties off tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) in the final round of the championship. They will once again be paired with Hawaii and Louisiana Tech.
