HENDERSON, Nevada (4/27/09) Blake Brown carded a 2-over-par 74 to lead Boise State in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev., this afternoon. The Broncos struggled out of the gates on Monday as they find themselves in ninth place with a 19-over 307, 25 strokes behind the day one leader and defending champion New Mexico State Aggies who turned in a 6-under 282.
The Broncos opened solid finishing the front nine in the middle of the pack at 5-over. Unfortunately, the back nine proved disastrous as several members of the team struggled down the stretch combining for a 14-over-par 158 dropping them to the bottom of the standings, one stroke behind Hawaii in eighth place.
Individually, Brown tallied the top score for Boise State with a 74 (+2) which places him in a seven-way tie for 18th. The freshman turned in a 1-under 35 on the front nine and a 3-over 39 on the back nine. He recorded four birdies and eight pars during the opening round. Brown is seven strokes out of first place entering the second day of competition.
Scott Loewen started the day slow but found his rhythm before the round ended. The senior carded a 3-over 39 on the front nine before turning it around on the back nine with an even-par 36. He ended the session at 3-over 75 and in a six-way tie for 25th. He recorded three birdies and 10 pars during the first round.
Robbie Richards had the third-best score of the day for Boise State at 6-over 78. The junior was strong on the first nine with a 1-over 37 before dropping off in the second half with a 5-over 41. Richards will enter the second round tied with six others for 34th.
John Baranco came in fourth on the Boise State roster after tallying an 8-over 80 in the opening round. Like Richards, Baranco had a solid front nine recording a 2-over 38. However, the back nine proved challenging as the junior carded a 6-over 42. Baranco enters day two tied for 40th in the standings.
Rounding out the Bronco squad was Kevin Tarango who fired a 10-over 82. The senior scored a 6-over 42 on the front nine before shaving two strokes off on the back nine with a 4-over 40.
The second day will have Boise State paired in the first group with Hawaii and Louisiana Tech. The group will begin the second round of action at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) at the Rio Secco Golf Club. Live scoring is available on the web at www.golfstats.com.
