Broncos Conclude Regular Season With 13th Place Finish at 2007 PING Golf Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah The Boise State University men’s golf team fought back from 18th place through the first round of the 2007 PING Golf Cougar Classic to finish in sole possession of 13th place with an 889 (+25).

 

After posting a 304 (+16) in round one the Broncos dropped 13 strokes from their score and shot a 3-over 291, move up five places into 13th. In the third round, Boise State registered a 294 (+6) to finish the tournament in 13th place.

 

Troy Merritt led the Broncos in scoring for the fourth consecutive tournament, as he rebounded from a shaky 78 (+6) in round one, to fire a 72 (E) in round two, before closing out with a 6-under, 66 in round three, to finish tied for 24th place and for the low-round at the PING Cougar Classic. This is the third consecutive tournament under par for Merritt, during which time he is averaging 69.3 strokes per round or seven strokes under par for the tournament. Merritt also moved into a tie for ninth place on the Boise State list for top 25 finishes with eight.

 

John Baranco finished second on the Boise State squad in scoring for the third consecutive tournament in which he played, as he shot a 217 (+1) to tie for 28th place. Baranco shot a 73 (+1) in the first, a 72 (E) in the second and a 72 (E) in the third to remain the most consistent scorer for the Broncos throughout the tournament. Baranco is averaging 71.0 strokes over his last six rounds.

 

Three other members of the team registered scores at the PING Cougar Classic. Matt Hastings finished tied for 72nd place with a 227 (+11). Robbie Richards shot a 13-over, 229 to finish tied for 79th place. Scott Loewen tied for 95th place with a 235 (+19).

 

Boise State will now prepare for the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championship which will be held Apr. 30-May 2, at the Hidden Valley Country Club at Reno, Nev.
