The Broncos will be represented by the quintet of senior Kyle Mitsunaga, junior Donny Hopoi, and freshmen Brian Humphreys, Connor Johnstone and Mason Schulze. It will mark the second-straight tournament in which Boise State has played this group, as the quintet finished ninth at the PING Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah, from April 10-11.
Mitsunaga is the only member of the group to have played at the Mountain West Championships before, having competed at last year's event where he finished tied for 22nd at 1-over, and in 2015.
Tee Times And Pairings
Boise State All-Time At The Mountain West Championships
The highest individual finish for a Bronco golfer at the event is fifth, achieved twice. Scott Spiewak came in tied for fifth at 2-under in 2012 while Taeksoo Kim finished fifth at 2-under in 2013.
Last year, the Bronco quintet of Mitsunaga, David Elliott, Alex Francois, Logan France and Shane Allor finished ninth with a combined team score of 872 (+20). France led the team by finishing tied for eighth at 4-under (71-67-74=212), just five strokes back of winner Trevor Clayton from Fresno State. France's 4-under is the lowest three-round score by a Bronco at the Mountain West Championships.
The other four members of Boise State's group are each in their first seasons as Broncos. Junior Donny Hopoi transferred to Boise State from Dixie State after the 2015-16 campaign, and the freshman trio of Brian Humphreys, Connor Johnstone and Mason Schulze are all in their debut collegiate seasons.
Donny Hopoi (Junior | Aiea, Hawaii)
Hopoi was part of the Bronco quintet that captured the team title at the Del Walker Intercollegiate (Feb. 27-28), making it the team's first title since 2013.
Brian Humphreys (Freshman | Washougal, Wash.)
In addition to his two tournament victories, Humphreys has posted four top-10 finishes out of his 10 competitions. He finished second at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational (Oct. 27-29) and took third at the Folino Invitational (Jan. 30-31).
Connor Johnstone (Freshman | Caldwell, Idaho)
Johnstone, who has competed in all six of Boise State's spring competitions, was the top Bronco finisher at the Bandon Dunes Championship, finishing at 4-over.
Kyle Mitsunaga (Senior | Boise, Idaho)
The Boise native has re-established himself in the rotation after an up-and-down fall and early spring. Mitsunaga competed at three fall tournaments, topping out with a 17th-place finish at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational with a 1-over. After participating at the Ka'Anapali Collegiate Classic (Nov. 4-6), Mitsunaga played in the PRO Compression Invitational (Feb. 13-14) then went two months between competitions, returning at the PING Cougar Classic. There, he finished tied for 27th at 2-over.
Mason Schulze (Freshman | Poway, Calif.)
Schulze has posted a top-10 finish this year, with that coming at the Del Walker Intercollegiate (Feb. 27-28) where he finished second at even par, just a stroke behind Humphreys, the event's medalist. Schulze was also part of that quintet that captured Boise State's first team tournament title since 2013. He finished tied for 17th at the Duck Invitational (April 10-11), finishing at 1-under.
