Provo, Utah The Boise State University men’s golf team has three golfers in the top 25 after the first round of the PING Golf Cougar Classic played Friday, Apr. 18, as the team is tied for sixth place with a 1-under 287.
Troy Merritt leads Bronco golfers with a 2-under 70 as he tied for 12th place after one round of play. He posted a 33 on the front-nine and a 37 on the back-nine. Merritt has now registered subpar scores in 20 of 30 rounds this season and nine of his last 10.
Matt Hastings is tied for 19th place with a 71 (-1). He registered a 34 on the front-nine and a 39 on the back-nine. If Hastings holds on for a top 25 finish he would move into second place in that category in Boise State history (20).
Robbie Richards is tied for 25th place with an even-par 72. He was consistent throughout the round registering a 36 on the front and back-nine. The round of 72 (E) is a season-low for Richards.
The Broncos are tied with BYU and Utah for sixth place at 287 (-1), but remain just two strokes behind fifth place Washington State.
Boise State also received a qualifying score from John Baranco with his two-over 74 as he tied for 50th place.
Tyler McDougall posted 79 (+7) to tie for 76th place and round out the scoring for the Broncos.
The second round of the tournament is being held during the afternoon of Friday, Apr. 18. The third round will begin at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, Apr. 19.
