Boise State Fires 3-over 291 on Final Day of PING Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah (4/16/2011) - Boise State University’s men’s golf team carded a solid 3-over 291 on the final day of the PING Cougar Classic Saturday afternoon in Provo, Utah. The Broncos finished the two-day tournament in 18th-place with a 29-over 893. Colorado State University won the team title with a 17-under 847. Leading Boise State was Scott Spiewak who shot 1-under 71 Saturday giving him a final tally of 5-over 221.

Trailing Colorado State for the team title were UNLV who finished at 13-under 851 and Pacific at 7-under 857. Boise State’s solid third round score of 291 (+3) was not enough for the Broncos to overcome a poor second round (311, +23) on Friday.  In the end the Broncos placed 18th overall with a 29-over 893 in their final tournament before the WAC Championship May 2-4 in Henderson, Nev.

BYU’s Zac Blair rallied to win the individual title with a 7-under 65 on the final day. He finished at 11-under 205 to out pace second-place Alex Edfort from Pacific by one stroke, 10-under 206.

Scott Spiewak recorded his top round of the tournament on Saturday with a 1-under 71. The junior from Arizona finished at 5-over 221 to tie for 47th. Taeksoo Kim was close behind for the Broncos tallying a 4-over 76 today, good for a final score of 6-over 222 and a tie for 51st.

Rounding out the scoring for Boise State were Taylor Porter at 10-over 226 (75-78-73), Clayton Kosanovich 11-over (73-83-71) and Charlie Marusiak 16-over 232 (76-80-76). Both Porter and Kosanovich recorded their best rounds of the PING Cougar Classic on Saturday at 73 (+1) and 71 (-1) respectively.
