Broncos Travel to Utah for PING Cougar Classic

What’s Happening - The Boise State University men’s golf team will travel to Provo, Utah, Apr. 18-19, to compete in the PING Cougar Classic. 


The tournament will be held at the par 72, 6,950-yard Riverside Golf Club. The tournament will feature 36 holes on Friday, Apr. 18, and the final 18 holes on Saturday Apr. 19. Both days will open with a tee starts on hole No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 8:00 a.m.


The Field The Broncos will be one of 16 teams competing in the PING Cougar Classic. Joining Boise State will be host BYU, Air Force, Idaho State, New Mexico, New Mexico State (No. 89), Sacramento State, St. Mary’s (No. 46), Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley State, Washington State, Weber State and Wyoming.


The Broncos - Boise State is the 95th ranked team in the country, according to Golfstat.  


Boise State posted its best finish of the spring when the team recorded a 875 (+23) to finish tied for second place at the OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.


In its opening tournament of the 2008 spring season, the Fresno State Lexus Classic, Boise State recorded an even-par 864, to finish eighth place in the 20-team field. In other spring tournaments, the Broncos posted a 24-under 852 to finish in fourth place at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate and a 12-over 852 to finish ninth at the Cowboy Classic.


The Players Troy Merritt, John Baranco, Matt Hastings, Robbie Richards and Tyler McDougall will represent Boise State at the 2008 PING Cougar Classic.


Troy Merritt earned his third consecutive victory as he posted an 8-under 202 at the Cowboy Classic. He now has earned five individual tournament victories this season and six in his Boise State career. This week, Merritt moved into sixth place on Golfstat Cup Standings list. He leads the NCAA in scoring average (69.2), par-3 scoring (2.97), par-4 scoring (3.94) and tournaments won (5) while tying for first in subpar strokes per round (4.93). Merritt was named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week twice for his performance in the spring.


Matt Hastings finished second to Merritt at the Ron Moore Invitational with a 10-under 206 for his career-best finish. Hasting is tied for second on the Bronco’s all-time list for career top 25 finishes (19) and fourth in career top 10 finishes (8). Hastings is averaging a career-low 72.5 strokes per round with a low round of 68 (-4).


Sophomore John Baranco has participated in all 10 tournaments for the Broncos and is averaging 72.6 strokes per round. He finished tied for second place at the Wolf Pack Classic with a career-low 5-under 211. Baranco has posted rounds of par or better in 14 of 29 rounds this year including a low round of 67 (-5) which he posted in the final round of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.


Robbie Richards is averaging 76.3 strokes per round in three tournaments. He registered a season-low 73 (+3) in the final round of the Cowboy Classic.


Tyler McDougall will be participating in his fourth tournament of the year and his first of the spring. He is averaging 79.3 strokes per round and posted a low round of 73 (+1) in the first round of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.
