SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (4/7/09)   Scott Loewen carded a career-low 67 (-3) during the final round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic moving up five spots to finish the tournament in a four-way tie for seventh. Meanwhile, the Broncos moved up one place following today’s final round in Scottsdale, Ariz., into a tie for 11th place out of 20 teams. Boise State recorded their best round of the event during this morning’s session with a 3-over-par 283, today’s seventh best round of the participating squads.

The Broncos were solid during the two-day competition sponsored by the University of Wyoming at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.  Boise State opened the final round tied with the Cowboys for 12th place at 585 (+25). They finished the day at 28-over-par at 868 and tied with UC Santa Barbara for 11th.

The Blue and Orange improved with each round in Arizona after opening with a 297 (+17) Monday morning they rallied with a 288 (+8) in the second session followed by today’s tournament-low round of 283 (+3). Among the teams Boise State defeated were Gonzaga (871, +31), San Jose State (875, +35), Old Dominion (876, +36), Wyoming (879, +39) and Utah (880, +40) respectively. The Big West Conference’s UC Davis Aggies ran away with the team title by 16 strokes finishing with a 15-under-par 825, Oregon State was a distant second at 841 (+1).

Individually, Loewen not only recorded his top-single-round score as a Bronco with the 67 but also the best tournament finish of his Boise State tenure.  He finished the Classic in a four-way tie for seventh place, the top individual performance for the team this spring. It is also one spot better than his previous best when the senior from Winnipeg, Canada, placed eighth (tied) at the Santa Clara Invitational last October. In all, Loewen recorded scores of 71-70-67 for a 2-under-par 208.

UC Davis’ Austin Graham rallied from a tie for second, four strokes back, after yesterday’s two rounds to win the individual title with a 6-under-par 204, out distancing Monday’s leader Morten Madsen of Oregon State by one stroke with a 205 (-5).

Boise State’s Robbie Richards also turned in a solid final round carding a 1-under-par 69. That gave him a three-round total of 220 (+10) for the second best Bronco result at the competition. The final round score of 69 tied his career-low which he accomplished twice last fall.

Sophomore Chris Byrne turned in the Broncos third-best overall total after tallying a 2-over-par 72 this morning. After struggling in the opening round the Boise native rallied with two solid performances finishing the three rounds with scores of 84-67-72 for a 223 (+13).

John Baranco struggled on Tuesday after a strong Monday. This morning the junior from Boise recorded an 8-over-par 78. That final result gave him a final total of 225 (+15).

Rounding out the five member roster for the Broncos was freshman Blake Brown who turned in his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 5-over-par 75 to finish with a total of 232 (+22).

The Broncos have one regular season tournament remaining before heading off to the Western Athletic Conference Championship at the end of this month. Next up is the BYU Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah, April 24-25.
