Broncos Travel To Arizona For Cowboy Classic

What’s Happening - The Boise State University men’s golf team will travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to compete in the Cowboy Classic, Apr. 7-8.


The tournament will be held at the par 70, 7,133-yard Talking Stick Golf Club. The tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday, Apr. 7, and the final 18 holes on Tuesday Apr. 8. Both days will open with a shotgun tee start at 7:45 a.m.


The Field Boise State will battle a 22-team field at the Cowboy open including No. 5 UCLA, No. 42 Oregon State, No. 56 Arizona and No. 87 UC Santa Barbara. The field will also include host Wyoming, Cal State Riverside, College of Charleston, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Kennesaw State, New Mexico, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Old Dominion, Southern Utah, UC Davis, Utah Valley State, UTEP, UTPA Weber State and Western Kentucky.


The Broncos - The Broncos are the 113th ranked team in the country.  


Boise State posted its best finish of the spring when the team recorded a 875 (+23) to finish tied for second place at the OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.


In its opening tournament of the 2008 spring season, the Fresno State Lexus Classic, Boise State recorded an even-par 864, to finish eighth place in the 20-team field. At the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, the Broncos posted a 24-under 852 to finish in fourth place.


The Players Troy Merritt, John Baranco, Matt Hastings, Robbie Richards and Kevin Tarango will represent Boise State at the 2008 Wyoming Cowboy Classic.


Troy Merritt followed up his individual victory and school-record 16-under 200 at the Ron Moore Invitational with a 199 (-14) at the OGIO Pacific Coast Classic to win his second consecutive tournament. With the win, Merritt now leads NCAA during the 2007-08 season in tournament victories with four and a 69.4 stroke per round scoring average. For his performances Merritt was named Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for the week of Mar. 16-23. Merritt also ranks third in the country in par-4 scoring (3.96) and seventh in par-5 scoring (4.58).



Matt Hastings finished second to Merritt at the Ron Moore Invitational with a 10-under 206 for his career-best finish. Hasting is tied for second on the Bronco’s all-time list for career top 25 finishes (19) and fourth in career top 10 finishes (8). Hastings is averaging a career-low 72.6 strokes per round with a low round of 68 (-4).


Sophomore John Baranco has participated in all nine tournaments for the Broncos and is averaging 72.6 strokes per round. He finished tied for second place at the Wolf Pack Classic with a career-low 5-under 211. Baranco led or was second on Boise State in scoring in five of six fall tournaments. In the fall he posted seven rounds under par, four in the 60s and a low round of 67 (-5).


Kevin Tarango posted career-best in a variety of categories at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. He recorded a career-low round of 69 (-3) and a low three-round score of 216 (E). He also posted his best collegiate finish as he placed 31st in the tournament. Tarango is averaging 76.2 strokes per round with a low round of 69 (-3).


Robbie Richards will be participating in his first tournament of the spring. In two fall tournaments, he posted a 76.6 stroke per round average with a low round of 73 (+1).
