The Broncos rebounded strongly with its 5-under performance Tuesday to cap off the 9-team event. The team slipped into a tie for fifth place after firing a 289 (+5) in round two after the team had been in second place with a 276 (-8) through round one. This is the best finish in relation to par for Boise State since finishing 16-under (836) at the District VII Shootout.
Troy Merritt led the Broncos with an 8-under 205 to finish in fifth place as he collected his second straight top 5 finish and third in his last five events. Merritt began the tournament by tying the course and tournament single round record of 63 (-8). His score also placed him one stroke off the Boise State record which Merritt set at the District VII Shootout and shares with Chris Clark at 9-under 62. Merritt also moves into a tie for sixth place on the Broncos’ all-time top 10 finishes list with five.
John Baranco posted career-best scores for a round and for a tournament at the Belmont Intercollegiate en route to his highest collegiate finish, a tie for 12th place. Baranco bested his previous low-round score by four strokes as he posted a 4-under 69 in the first and third rounds. The 209 (-4) registered by Baranco is the first time he finished a tournament below par and is 13 strokes better than his previous career-best of 222 (+6) that he recorded at the Santa Clara Invitational in Oct. 2006.
Matt Hastings finished in a tie for 29th place at 214 (+1) after he shot a 69 (-2) in the final round to move up 14 places. Hastings remained consistent throughout the tournament for Boise State registering a 73 (+2) in round one, a 72 (+1) in round two and a 69 (-2) in round three to register three contributing scores for Boise State.
Freshman Chris Byrne also rewrote his personal records as he shot a 216 (+3) to finish tied for 37th. The 71 (E) Byrnes registered in the first and third rounds bested his previous career-low of 73 (+2) which he set at the District VII Shootout by two strokes. His tournament score of 216 (+3) was six strokes better than the 222 (+9) he shot at the District VII Shootout.
Shawn Tonkin rounded out the scoring for the Broncos with his 231 (+18) to finish in sole possession of 59th place.
