Merritt Tied For Third Place as Team Sets Season-Low Score at Belmont Intercollegiate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Boise State University golfer Troy Merritt stands tied for third place with a 7-under par, 135, through two rounds of the Belmont Intercollegiate at the par 71 Old Natchez Country Club.


In the first round, Merritt shot a 63 (-8) to lead the field while matching the course and tournament low-round record. The score was the second-best of Merritt’s career and one off the school record which Merritt shares with Chris Clark after shooting a 9-under par, 62 in the second round of the District VII Shootout in Oct.


In the second round of the Belmont Intercollegiate Merritt shot a 72 (+1) to fall back but remain among the leaders.


Freshman John Baranco finished the second round tied for 19th at 2-under par, 140. Baranco bested his career-low score by four strokes when he shot a 69 (-2) in the first round and followed it up with an even-par 71.


Aided by the strong individual performances and team-wide contributions, the Boise State golf team stands tied for fifth place through two round of play with a 3-under par, 565. Just as Merritt and Baranco recorded their best score in the first round so did the Broncos, who opened the day by shooting a season-best 276 (-8) in the first round.


Matt Hastings was consistent for the two rounds, shooting a 73 (+2) in round one and a 72 (+1) in round two to stand tied for 43rd with a 3-over, 145.


 Chris Byrne is also tied for 43 rd with a 145 (+3) after shooting a career-best 71 (E) in round one and a 74 (+3) in round two.


Shawn Tonkin shot a 78 (+7) in round one and a 74 (+3) in round two to cap off the scoring for the Boise State Broncos.


Play in the 12-team Belmont Intercollegiate at Old Natchez Country Club will continue with the final 18-holes Tuesday, Apr. 3, beginning at 9:00 a.m. (MT).
