Broncos Travel to Santa Barbara For OGIO Intercollegiate

What’s Happening - The Boise State University men’s golf team will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., to compete in the 2008 OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Mar. 31-Apr. 1.


The tournament will be held at the par 71, 6,814-yard Rancho San Marcos Golf Course. The tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday, Mar. 31, beginning at 8:00 a.m., with a shotgun start. The final 18 holes will be played Apr. 1, with a split tee start beginning at 7:30 a.m.


The Field The field at the OGIO Pacific Coast will feature 12 teams including two ranked in the top 100 according to Golfweek. Boise State (No. 109) will be joined by Loyola Marymount (No. 73), host UC Santa Barbara (No. 89), Cal State Northridge (No. 125), Cal Poly (No. 132), Cal State Riverside (No. 135), Long Beach State (No. 153), Sacramento State (No. 168), San Francisco (No. 180), Weber State (No. 207) and Idaho State (No. 254).


The Broncos - The Broncos are the 109th ranked team in the country.  


In its opening tournament of the 2008 spring season, the Fresno State Lexus Classic, Boise State recorded an even-par 864, to finish eighth place in the 20-team field. At the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, the Broncos posted a 24-under 852 to finish in fourth place.


The Players Troy Merritt, John Baranco, Matt Hastings, Drew Surmeier and Kevin Tarango will represent Boise State at the 2008 OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.


Troy Merritt continued his stellar senior season as he recorded his third victory of the year. He posted a school-record 16-under 200 at the Ron Moore Invitational to capture the fourth individual title of his career. For his performance Merritt was named Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for the week of Mar. 16-23. Merritt is averaging 69.8 strokes per round this year with a low round of 64 (-8).


Matt Hastings finished second to Merritt at the Ron Moore Invitational with a 10-under 206 for his career-best finish. Hasting is tied for second on the Bronco’s all-time list for career top 25 finishes (19) and fourth in career top 10 finishes (8). Hastings is averaging a career-low 72.2 strokes per round with a low round of 68 (-4).


Sophomore John Baranco has participated in all seven tournaments for the Broncos and is averaging 72.3 strokes per round. He finished tied for second place at the Wolf Pack Classic with a career-low 5-under 211. Baranco led or was second on Boise State in scoring in five of six fall tournaments. In the fall he posted seven rounds under par, four in the 60s and a low round of 67 (-5).


Kevin Tarango posted career-best in a variety of categories at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. He recorded a career-low round of 69 (-3) and a low three-round score of 216 (E). He also posted his best collegiate finish as he placed 31st in the tournament. Tarango is averaging 76.4 strokes per round with a low round of 69 (-3).


Drew Surmeier registered his career-best finish at the Ron Moore Invitational when he posted a 10-over 226. Surmeier is averaging 79.0 strokes per round with a low-round of 76 (+4).
