Merritt Wins Second Consecutive Ron Moore Invite; Hastings Finishes Second

Goodyear, Ariz. Boise State University golfer Troy Merritt captured his second consecutive Ron Moore Invitational title with a school-record 200 (-16), Sunday, Mar. 23.


Merritt led the tournament from the onset, as he posted a 66 (-6) in round one, a 65 (-7) in round two and a 69 (-3) in round three. Merritt s 200 (-16) bested his own school record for a three-round score of 203 (-13) which he set at the 2007 Ron Moore Invitational. He also led all individuals at the tournament in birdies (19) and par-4 scoring (-10).


This is Merritt’s third victory of the season and fourth of his career. He tied David Lubeck (1992-93) and Graham DeLaet (2002-03 and 2005-06) for second place on Broncos’ all-time list for individual victories in with three.


Matt Hastings recorded the best three-round score of his collegiate career as he posted a 10-under 206. He continued to ascend the individual leader board each day of the tournament. He posted a 69 (-3) in the first round to tie for ninth, then recorded a 68 (-4) in the second to move into a tie for 5th before registering a 69 (-3) in the final round to place second.  Hastings finished second at  the tournament in par-5 scoring (-9) and ninth in par-4 scoring (-2).


This was the best career finish for the senior Hastings who topped his previous best finish of third at the 2005 Santa Clara University Invitational.


Led performances of the two seniors Merritt and Hastings, the Broncos were propelled into fourth place with an 852 (-24). Boise State finished ahead of Western Athletic Conference rival New Mexico State and five teams ranked higher in the polls (Denver, New Mexico State, Colorado State, San Diego and Iowa State.


John Baranco, Kevin Tarango and Drew Surmeier rounded out the scoring for the Broncos. Baranco notched a 220 (+4) to finish tied for 44th place, Surmeier posted a 226 (+10) to tied for 64th and Tarango registered a 235 (+19) to finished tied for 77th place.


The Boise State men’s golf team will continue its season Mar. 31-Apr. 1 with the Ogio Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Santa Barbara, Calif.
