Loewen Records Fifth Top-25 Finish as Broncos Take Ninth Place at Desert Shootout?

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (3/21/09) Senior Scott Loewen carded a one-under- par 71 during the final round of the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz., to lead the Broncos to a ninth place finish overall. Boise State struggled in today’s final round tallying an eight-over-par 296 as the Broncos finished with a three-day total of 861 (-3). The University of Denver won its own event with a 829 (-35) to finish one stroke ahead of Tulsa in second with an 830 (-34).

Scott Loewen was consistent for Boise State throughout the three-day tournament recoding three rounds under par for the first time in his Bronco career. The senior turned in a 69 (-3) on Thursday followed by two days at 71 (-1). The Winnipeg, Manitoba native finished the competition with a five-under-par 211 to finish in a six-way tie for 16th. He moved up two spots today after entering the final round tied for 19th.

Chris Byrne turned in the second-best round for Boise State today firing a one-over-par 73 to finish the tournament with a 228 (+12).

John Baranco, Blake Brown, and Robbie Richards all struggled during the final round in Arizona after entering the day with two-round scores under par. Baranco recorded a four-over-par 76 during the final session to give him a final mark of even-par 216 which tied him with four others for 37th place.

Brown matched Baranco’s third round score of 76 (+4) as he finished in a six-way tie for 51st with a three-over-par 219. Junior Robbie Richards rounded out Boise State’s afternoon with a five-over-par 77 as he finished tied with Brown for 51st.

Next up for Boise State is the Cowboy Classic April 6-7 at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., hosted by the University of Wyoming.
