Boise State Finishes 14th at Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (3/19/2011) - Boise State’s men’s golf team shot a 9-over 297 on the final round of the Denver Desert Shootout Saturday afternoon in Goodyear, Ariz. Overall the Broncos recorded their best tournament score of the spring matching yesterday’s total to end the three-day event at Palm Valley Golf Club in 14th-place with a 18-over 882. Junior Scott Spiewak led Boise State at the competition with a 2-over 218.

The University of Oklahoma led the team competition from the start, running away with the championship carding a 48-under 816. The Sooners won by 22 strokes over second-place Iowa State University who finished at 26-under 838.  For Boise State, the Broncos recorded their top performance of the spring with a 18-over 882, including their top three single-round scores of 288 (E), 297 (+9) and 297 (+9).

Oklahoma’s Abraham Ancer shared the individual lead following the first two rounds, however on Saturday he pulled away with an impressive 9-under 63 to finish at 21-under 195 overall. He took home the medalist honors by six strokes over his teammate Will Kropp who finished at 15-under (201).

Scott Spiewak led Boise State after three days of play with a final tally of 2-over 218 (71-71-76), tying for 51st overall. It was the best tournament score for the junior from Prescott, Ariz., this semester. Charlie Marusiak shot a 5-over 77 this afternoon giving the sophomore from Phoenix a three-round total of 3-over-par 219.

Close behind was Clayton Kosanovich who finished at 4-over 220 (72-75-73). He competed as an individual during this competition.

Rounding out the team scoring for the Broncos were Chris Byrne at 5-over 221 (77-73-71). The senior from Boise shot a team-low 1-under 71 on today’s final 18. Taeksoo Kim finished next at 12-over 228 (73-80-75) followed by Taylor Porter at 14-over 230 (76-79-75).

Boise State will now have sometime off before the Broncos are back in action at the PING Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah, April 15-16.
