GOODYEAR, Ariz. Boise State University men’s golfer Troy Merritt captured the individual title at the Ron Moore Invitational at Goodyear, Ariz., Tuesday, as he shot a 13-under par, 203 to win the event by two strokes.

This is the first individual title for Merritt in his Boise State career. He finished tied for first at the District VII Shootout but lost in a playoff. Merritt remained consistent throughout the tournament as he shot a 67 (-5) in round one, a 68 (-4) in round two and a 68 (-4) in the final round to remain among the leaders.

The tournament victory marks the first time since 1988-89 that Boise State has had multiple golfers capture individual titles in the same season. Merritt joined Nick Travers who won the Vandal Fall Classic at Moscow, Idaho, Sept. 25-26, as the only Broncos to capture an individual title during the 2006-07 season.

His three-round total of 203 is two strokes off the school-record of 201, which Merritt set at the District VII Shootout, Oct. 9-10, 2006.

Matt Hastings fired a 207 (-9) for the tournament to finish tied for fifth place and gave the Broncos their first pair of top five finishers this season. Hastings opened the tournament with a 67 (-5) and followed it up with a 71 (-1) in the second round but he rebounded in the third round and shot a 69 (-3) to close out the event. This is the first top 10 finish this season for Hastings recording five in his previous two seasons.

As a team, Boise State men’s golf finished in ninth place with a 3-over, 867.

Other Boise State finishers included Shawn Tonkin (228, +12) tied for 76th place, Robbie Richards (234, +18) tied for 86th place and Scott Loewen (239, +23) in 97th.

Boise State will now prepare for the Belmont Invitational, Apr. 2-3, at Nashville, Tenn.
