Brown is tied for fourth place after the first 18.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (3/18/2010) - The Boise State men’s golf team recorded a solid opening round tallying a 5-under-par 283 during the first session of the Denver Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz. As a team Boise State finished among the top teams in the tournament after the first 18 holes, six strokes out of first place. The University of the Pacific has taken the early lead turning in an event-best 11-under 277 this afternoon. Twelve strokes separate the top-12 teams out of  17 competing at the shootout. Thursday afternoon.

Leading the way for the Broncos is Blake Brown who is currently in an eight-way tie, out of 102 participants, for fourth place with a 4-under 68. Four of five Boise State golfers shot even par or better in today’s first round. Alex Johnson of Pacific is in first-place firing a 6-under 66 to give him a one-stroke lead over Eastern Michigan’s Brandon Lemons and Kansas State’s Joe Kinney with 67s.

Robbie Richards recorded the second-best opening round score for Boise State firing a 1-under 71 to finished day one in a 12-way tied for 25th. Taeksoo Kim and Chris Byrne each shot even-par 72s and are in a tie for 37th, followed by John Baranco with a 5-over 77.

This is the fourth competition of the spring semester for the Broncos. Boise State will look to move up the standings tomorrow when the second round of the three-day Denver Desert Shootout will be staged at Palm Valley Golf Club.
