Broncos in Seventh Place After Day One of Desert Shootout?

Three Broncos finish day one under par.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (3/19/09) Boise State finds itself in the middle of the pack after day one of the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz. The Broncos tallied a five-under-par 283 during the opening round Thursday finishing in seventh place out of 14 teams, 12 strokes back of tournament leader and host the University of Denver at 271 (-17). The second round will take place tomorrow at  Palm Valley Golf Club with the final round on Saturday.

Leading the way for Boise State was senior Scott Loewen who carded a three-under-par 69 to finish in a six-way tie for 16th. The senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, tied his second-best-single-round score of the season. Loewen will begin the second round five strokes out of first place where there is a tie between Air Force’s Tom Whitney and Tulsa’s Nicolas Geyger with eight-under-par 64s.

John Baranco turned in a two-under-par 70 to finish day one tied with seven others for 22nd. The senior from Boise is one 51 student-athletes that fired even-par or better during the first round, all are jammed up within eight strokes of each other from first thru 51st.

Rounding out the opening day for the Broncos were Robbie Richards who recorded a one-under-par 71, currently in a 10-way tie for 30th, freshman Blake Brown finished at one-over-par 73, while sophomore Chris Byrne came in with an 82 (+10).

Tomorrow will open with the Broncos among the first tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. (Mountain). The Broncos will look to move up the tournament ladder only five strokes out of third and 12 out of first. Loewen will push for his fifth top-25 finish this season, while Baranco shoots for his fourth.
