Broncos Travel to Arizona For Ron Moore Invitational

What’s Happening - The Boise State University men’s golf team will travel to Goodyear, Ariz., to compete in the 2008 Ron Moore Invitational Mar. 21-23.


The tournament will be held at the par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Club and will feature 18 holes of golf each of the three days. Friday and Saturday, Mar. 21-22, the tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m., with tee offs on holes No. 1 and No. 10. The final round of the tournament, Sunday, Mar. 23, will open with a shotgun start beginning at 8:00 a.m.


The Field The field at the Ron Moore Invitational will included 17 collegiate teams.


The Broncos - The Broncos are the 113th ranked team in the country with a 73.55 rating after moving up from No. 122 (73.56 rating), according to Golfweek. The Broncos are currently the fourth ranked team in the Western Athletic Conference trailing No. 95 Nevada (73.21), No. 99 New Mexico State (73.29), and No. 101 Fresno State (73.29). 


In its opening tournament of the 2008 spring season, the Fresno State Lexus Classic, Boise State recorded an even-par 864, to finish eighth place in the 20-team field.


The Players Troy Merritt, John Baranco, Matt Hastings, Drew Surmeier and Kevin Tarango will represent Boise State at the 2008 Ron Moore Classic.


Troy Merritt continued his stellar senior season as he posted a 213 (-3) to finish tied for 15th at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. Merritt now stands in eighth place on the Broncos all-time list with 15 top 25 finishes. He also captured the individual title at the Giustina Memorial Classic and the Purple and Red Invitational in the fall season. He set the school-record for a low two-round score at the Purple and Red Invitational with a 10-under 134. He recorded three rounds in the 60s (68-67-69) to post a 12-under 204 and capture the individual title at the Giustina Memorial Classic. Overall, Merritt posted five top 15 finishes in six fall events and has led the Broncos in scoring for all but one tournament. He currently holds the Bronco single-season record for scoring average, 70.3, and is tied for third place on the Broncos all-time list for career top 10 finishes with 10. In the fall, Merritt posted 10 rounds under par, nine round in the 60s and a low of 64 (-8) in 17 rounds of play. Merritt was named the Western WAC Men’s Golfer of the Month for Sept., and is ranked No. 92 with a 71.31 rating according to Golfweek.


Matt Hastings posted a 1-over 217 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. Hastings remained a consistent force for the Broncos throughout the fall as he posted three top 25 finishes. His best finish came in the Santa Clara Invitational when he tied for ninth place with a 2-under 214. During the fall, Hastings recorded a career-low 72.8 strokes per round. He moved into a tie for third place on the Broncos all-time list for career top 25 finishes with 18 and into a tie for seventh place on the all-time list for career top 10 finishes with seven.


Sophomore John Baranco has participated in all seven tournaments for the Broncos and is averaging 72.2 strokes per round. He finished tied for second place at the Wolf Pack Classic with a career-low 5-under 211. Baranco led or was second on Boise State in scoring in five of six fall tournaments. In the fall he posted seven rounds under par, four in the 60s and a low round of 67 (-5).


Kevin Tarango posted career-best in a variety of categories at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. He recorded a career-low round of 69 (-3) and a low three-round score of 216 (E). He also posted his best collegiate finish as he placed 31st in the tournament.


Drew Surmeier will be participating in his second tournament as a member of the Broncos.
