Baranco ties for fith place.

BANDON, Ore. (3/12/2010) - Boise State University’s men’s golf team shot a 308 (+24) on the final day of the Bandon Dunes Championship Friday afternoon to place fourth out of seven teams. The competition that was played at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., was hampered by severe weather conditions both days resulting in the event canceling the third round. This morning the teams completed the second round which was suspended yesterday due to darkness.

The heavy rain and high wind conditions inflated scores and slowed play throughout the competition. The Broncos finished the tournament with a two-round score of 73-over-par 641 (333, 308) to place fourth, 19 strokes behind the University of Notre Dame who won the tournament with a 54-over-par 622 (317, 305).

On the individual side, Boise State was led by John Baranco who shaved four strokes off his first round score to record a 76 (+5) on the second 18. The senior from Boise finished with a team-best two-round score of 156 (+14) to tie for fifth place.

Blake Brown and Robbie Richards finished in a two-way tie for 11th place with 18-over 160s. Brown, a sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., rallied in the second round cutting 12 strokes of his first round total to finish the final session with a 3-over 74. Richards improved four strokes firing a 7-over 78 on the final round. They were followed by senior Drew Surmeier (85, 81) and junior Chris Byrne (86, 80) who tied for 23rd with 24-over 166s.

This concludes the third competition of the spring semester and seventh of the season. Next up for the Broncos is the Denver Desert Shootout March 18-20 in Goodyear, Ariz. (Tucson area).
