FRESNO, Calif. The Boise State University men’s golf team is tied for seventh place with a 298 (+11) through the first round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Sunnyside Golf Course, Monday.
Although Boise State stands tied for seventh place they remain only six strokes back of Western Athletic Conference rival for third place.
Once again Troy Merritt leads the Broncos as he registered a 1-under par, 71, in the opening round to tie for eighth place.
Boise State was also encouraged by the performances of Boise, Idaho natives and freshmen John Baranco and Chris Byrne who each turned in a 74 (+2) to tie for 24th after the first round of play.
Juniors Scott Loewen and Matt Hastings tied for 74th as each shot a 79 (+7).
The final Boise State golfer Shawn Tonkin tied for 93rd place with a 16-over par, 88.
The Fresno State Lexus Classic is a unique tournament because it allows teams to play six golfers while only counting the top four scores from each team.
