Boise State Heads to Bandon Dunes Championship

► What’s Happening
Boise State University’s men’s golf team will compete in the second annual Bandon Dunes Championship this Friday and Saturday in Bandon, Ore., along the Pacific coast. The 16-team competition is hosted by Gonzaga University at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. The two-day, 54-hole competition will be staged this Friday through Saturday, March 10-11. This is the third tournament of the spring and seventh of the year for the Broncos during the 2010-11 campaign. Live stats will be available at www.GolfStat.com.

► What Has Happened Recently
Boise State’s last tournament was Feb. 26-27 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at Classic Club Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The Broncos struggled in California finishing 18th out of 20 teams carding a 939 (+75) on 54 holes. Taeksoo Kim was the top golfer for the Broncos at the event with a 12-over 228, tying for 36th.

► Format For the Bandon Dunes Championship
The squad format for this event features the typical five-man teams, top-four scores per round count towards team total. The competition format for this tournament calls for three rounds, 54 holes, of stroke play staged over two days. The action begins Friday with 36 continuous holes, followed by the final 18 on Saturday. 

► The Host Course
The host facility for this event is Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.   This will be the second-straight year for this tournament which utilizes one of the four Bandon courses. Last year’s event was played on Pacific Dunes Course. All four courses are ranked in Golfweek’s 2011 Best Resort Courses. Pacific Dunes is ranked No. 1, Old MacDonald, site of next year’s championship, is No. 2, Bandon Dunes is No. 6 and Bandon Trails is No. 11. This year’s competition will use the Bandon Dunes Course and feature a par-72 over 6,798 yards.

► The Team Field
The tournament will feature 16 teams, 15 from NCAA Division I schools one from Canada. Boise State and San Jose State will represent the Western Athletic Conference at this event. There will also be four Golfweek’s top-50 teams in No. 4 Florida, No. 23 Washington, No. 42 Oregon and No. 43 Oregon State. The remaining 10 teams include: British Columbia, Colorado, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Mercer, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary’s, South Carolina, Utah Valley and Vanderbilt.  In addition to the 16 five-man teams, there will also be 10 individuals competing for a total of 90 participants.

► Boise State’s Tournament Roster
Boise State will travel six golfers to the competition this week. Competing for the team total will be Taeksoo Kim starting at the number one position, Taylor Porter, Scott Spiewak, Chris Byrne, and Minwoo Park. The sixth-man is Clayton Kosanovich who will be competing as an individual.
