Baranco sits in fourth-place tie.
BANDON, Ore. (3-11-2010) - Rain and heavy winds made the first day of the Bandon Dunes Championship miserable as the Boise State men’s golf team found itself in fourth place out of seven teams when play was suspended because of darkness. The weather conditions slowed play and inflated the scores on the day as the Broncos carded a 333 (+49) in the morning session, they were unable to complete the afternoon session before the round was stopped.
The weather conditions played a major role in the event Thursday as heavy rain and steady wind of 25 miles per hour with gusts at 50+ throughout much of the day raked havoc at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore. Another 1 ½ inches of rain and heavy winds are expected tonight as well which could cause the scheduled 54-hole tournament to be cut to 36, that decision will be made Friday morning.
Only two teams managed to finished the second round on Thursday, the Broncos were not one of them. As a result only the first round’s scores were available late Thursday night. At the end of the morning session Boise State found itself in fourth place 16 strokes back of the University of Notre Dame who recorded the first round’s top score of 33-over 317.
On the individual side, Boise State was led by senior John Baranco who tallied a team-best 9-over par 80 on the opening 18 holes to finish the round tied for fourth place. He was followed by seniors Robbie Richards with a 11-over 82 and Drew Surmeier with a 14-over 85. Rounding out the roster for Boise State were sophomore Blake Brown and junior Chris Byrne who fired 15-over 86s.
The second round will be completed tomorrow morning with a start time of 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) scheduled. The final/third round would follow the completion of the second round if it is played.
