Broncos finish in 8th with an even-par 864

FRESNO, Calif. - The Boise State University men’s golf team recorded an even-par 864 at the two-day Fresno State Lexus Classic to finish in eighth place in the 20-team field.


The Broncos posted an even-par 288 in the third round of the tournament which is being held at the par-72, 6,729-yard Fort Washington Country Club in Fresno, Calif., to move up the leader board. Boise State finished ahead of all three Western Athletic Conference teams, Nevada, Fresno State and Idaho, in the field. The Broncos, ranked 122nd according to Golfstat, knocked off seven teams, Loyola Marymount (No. 70), Kansas State (No. 75), Fresno State (No. 81), Santa Clara (No. 89), Portland (No. 108), Nevada (No. 108) and BYU (No. 110), ranked above them in the standings with their seventh place finish.


“We played even-par golf on a very difficult course with really fast greens,” said head coach Kevin Burton “It was very good that we were able to beat every team from the WAC in the field and even a couple of top 100 teams.”


Troy Merritt led all Boise State golfers with a 3-under 213 to finish tied for 15th place. Merritt posted a 74 (+2) in the first round before registering a 6-under 66 in the second to move amongst the leaders. He post a 73 (+1) in the final round as he collected his 15th career top 25 finish to move him into a tie for seventh on the Broncos’ all-time list.


Kevin Tarango recorded the best finish of his Boise State career as he posted an even-par 216 to finish the tournament tied for 31st. Tarango posted a career-best round with a 3-under 69 in the final round of the tournament. He registered four birdies and one eagle en route to achieving the third round score.


Matt Hastings finished tied for 38th place with a 1-over 217. He posted three birdies during the third round and finished with a 74 (+2).


John Baranco remains the model of consistency for the Broncos. He posted a 74 (+2) in round one, a 72 (E) in round two and a 72 (E) in round three to finish the tournament tied for 43rd place with a 218 (+2). Baranco entered the tournament averaging 72.1 strokes per round.


Drew Surmeier rounded out the scoring for Boise State with a 248 (+32).


The Boise State men’s golf team will continue its season Mar. 21-23 with the Ron Moore Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz.
