Fresno State Lexus Classic on the Horizon for Boise State

What’s Happening   The Boise State University men’s golf team is preparing to compete in the 2007 Fresno State Lexus Classic, Mar. 12-13, at the Sunnyside Country Club.


The teams will begin in a shotgun start Monday and Tuesday, at 8:00 a.m., on the par 72, 6,950 yard course. The Fresno State Lexus Classic will also feature a six-man format, with the top four scores counting for each team.


The Field The 15-team field will feature Boise State, UTEP, San Diego State, Wyoming, UC Irvine, Oregon, CSU Northridge, Kansas State, Pacific and CSU Bakersfield. Joining the Broncos in the tournament’s field are Western Athletic Conference rivals Fresno State, Nevada, Hawaii, San Jose State and New Mexico State


The Players The Boise State golf team will send juniors Scott Loewen, Troy Merritt and Matt Hastings along with freshmen Shawn Tonkin, John Baranco and Chris Byrne.


Loewen enters the dual match averaging 76.9 strokes per round. He recorded a career best 70 (-2), in the final round of the Thunderbird Invitational to assist Boise State in dropping 21 strokes from its first round score.


Merritt continues to be a leader for the Broncos as he registered a 138 (-6) at the tournament to tie for fourth and lead the Broncos’ comeback. During fall play, Merritt shot a school-record 62 (-9), en route to tying for first place at the District VII Shootout. Merritt collected four top 25 appearances and two top 10 finishes to average 72.0 shots per round in the fall. He has averaged 75.0 strokes per round in two spring tournaments.


Hastings recorded two top 25 finishes during the fall to move into 10th place on the Boise State all-time list with 12 in his career. He averaged 73.5 shots per round during the fall and fired a career best round of 67 at the Purple and Red Invitational. Hastings led the Broncos at the Braveheart Classic with a 231 (+15) to tie for 18th place.


Tonkin competed in five fall tournaments including tying for 24th at the District VII Shootout where he recorded a career best 70 (-1). Tonkin was also vital in the Broncos rise from 15th place to sixth place as he dropped nine strokes between rounds and recorded a 71 (-1) on the final day.


Baranco is participating in his second event as a member of the Boise State golf team. At the Santa Clara Invitational, Baranco finished tied for 20th after registering a 222 (+6).


Bryne played in two fall tournaments, posting a 75.7 scoring average.
