► What’s Happening
Boise State men’s golf returns to action March 9-10 when they compete at the Fresno State Lexus Classic being held at Belmont Country Club in Fresno, Calif. The Broncos are one of 20 teams competing in the 54-hole three-round tournament. It has been a month since the Broncos last competed at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. Boise State looks to shake off the winter layoff with a solid outing in California as the spring season swings into full gear.
► Boise State’s Tournament Roster
Competing for the Broncos at the Fresno State tournament with be senior Scott Loewen (72.6 avg.) playing at the number one position, junior John Baranco (74.9 avg.) will play the two, freshman Blake Brown (73.3 avg.) the three, junior Robbie Richards (75.2 avg.) at the four, while senior Kevin Tarango (78.7 avg.) gets the nod at the fifth position. The first four have been main stays in the Bronco lineup this year, while Tarango makes his third tournament appearance of the 2008-09 season.
► The Tournament History and Format
The 54-hole tournament is being hosted by Western Athletic Conference member Fresno State and will feature 20 collegiate teams with over 100 student-athletes participating. The competition is over 40 years old dating back to the first tournament in 1964. San Diego State has won the event the last two years while BYU has a captured the title 11 times. This year’s tournament format calls for three rounds of 18 holes each. The first two rounds will be played Monday with the final round contested on Tuesday morning.
► The Tournament Course
This year’s edition of the Fresno State Lexus Classic is being held at Belmont Country Club in Fresno, Calif. The club features a flat landscape with a par 72 competition course that stretches over 6,503 yards. ► The Tournament Field
The field competing against the Broncos includes: Arizona State, BYU, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Fresno City College, Fresno State, Hawai’i, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Diego State, San Jose State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UTEP and Washington.
► The Broncos’ Record Versus Tournament Field
So far this year through six competitions the Broncos have gone 5-7 against members of this competition: CSU Bakersfield 1-0, CSU Northridge 1-1, Fresno State 0-1, Hawai’i 1-0, Nevada 0-1, Sacramento State 1-0, San Diego 0-1, San Jose State 0-2, UCSB 0-1, and UTEP 1-0. Boise State is meeting nine of the 19 schools for the first time this year at the classic.
