Boise State Finishes 18th at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Palm Desert, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2011) -- The Boise State University men’s golf team finished the 2011 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in 18th-place on Sunday in Palm Desert, Calif. The Broncos struggled in their second competition of the spring season firing a final score of 939 (+75). Texas A&M won the team title by five strokes over UNLV recording a three-round score of 15-over 879. The tournament was played on the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The course measured 7,305 yards and played to a par of 72.

The Texas A&M Aggies fired the low round of the tournament on Sunday. A&M shot a final round of 292, four-over par, to win by five over UNLV. The Rebels entered Sunday’s round trailing the Aggies by only three strokes as a team.

Boise State recorded its top score during the opening round with a 305 (+17). Unfortunately, things did not go well in the next two rounds as the Broncos shot a 316(+28) in the second and a final score of 318 (+30) during round three.

Scott Travers of Santa Clara captured the individual championship. Travers ended the 54 holes tied with Kevin Penner of UNLV at three-under par, 213. The tiebreaker was decided by which of the two shot the lower final round. Travers fired a final round of 69 (-3), while Penner shot a final round 74 (+2). A year ago, Travers finished second to Wyoming’s Maier for the individual title. Travers and Penner were the only two individuals to finish the tournament under par at 213 (-3).

Tournament champion Texas A&M, entered this week ranked No. 10 in the Golfweek.com college rankings. The other ranked teams in the field included: No. 54 SMU, which finished the UW Desert Intercollegiate in third place; No. 60 New Mexico (9th in the Desert Intercollegiate), No. 62 UNLV (2nd) and No. 72 Colorado State (tied for 6th in the Desert Intercollegiate).

Boise State was led by sophomore Taeksoo Kim who carded the top round score for the Broncos in round one with a 1-over 73. He followed that with a 5-over 77 in round two and a 6-over 78 on the final 18, giving him a total of 12-over 228 tying for 36th.

Taylor Porter was second for the Broncos with a 19-over 235 (74-82-79) followed by Charlie Marusiak at 22-over 238 (76-81-81), Scott Spiewak at 29-over 245 (86-76-83) and Chris Byrne with a 35-over 251 (82-89-80).

Boise State’s next tournament will be at Gonzaga University’s Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore., on March 11-12.
