► What’s Happening
Boise State University’s men’s golf team is off to its second tournament of the spring the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at Palm Desert, California. The competition is hosted by future Mountain West Conference rival the University of Wyoming at Classic Club Golf Resort. The two-day, 54-hole competition will be staged this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26-27. This is the sixth competition for the Broncos in the 2010-11 campaign. 

► What Has Happened Recently
Boise State’s last competition was Feb. 14-15 at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational at St. George, Utah. The Broncos struggled in the spring opener finishing tied for 11th out of 12 teams carding a 29-over 605 on 36 holes. Taeksoo Kim and Charlie Marusiak led Boise State tying for 23rd with a 2-over-par 146’s.

► Format For the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate
The squad format for this event features the typical five-man teams, top-four scores per round count towards team total. The competition format for this tournament calls for three rounds, 54 holes, of stroke play staged over two days, Feb. 26-27. The action begins Saturday with 36 continuous holes, followed by the final 18 on Sunday. Both days will begin by shotgun start at 8:45 p.m. (Mountain).

► The Host Course
The host facility for this event is Classic Club Golf Course in Palm Desert, Calif. This is the host course for the PGA’s Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. The tournament will be played as a par 72 on a 7,322-yard layout.  Other honors/recognition for the course include: 2010 “Best Courses You Can Play” by Golfweek 2009 and 2010 “Best Resort Courses of Distinction” by Golfweek

► The Team Field
The Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate will feature 20 teams from NCAA Division I schools. Boise State and Hawai’i will represent the Western Athletic Conference at this event. The remaining 18 schools include Air Force, Cal Poly, Colorado State, Denver, Drake, Kansas, Long Beach State, Nebraska, New Mexico, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, SMU, Texas A&M, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV, UTEP, Weber State and the host Wyoming Cowboys.  There will be over 100 individuals competing for the team and individual titles.

► Boise State’s Tournament Roster
Boise State will travel five golfers to the competition this week. Competing for the team total will be Taeksoo Kim, Charlie Marusiak, Scott Spiewak, Chris Byrne and Taylor Porter.

No. 1 Position: Taeksoo Kim - The sophomore from Hawaii, is playing in his fifth event of the year averaging 74.9 strokes per round.  His season-low in the fall was 5-over 221 at the Purple and Red where he tied for 34th. He led the team at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational Feb. 14-15 with a 2-over 146, tied for 23rd.
 
No. 2 Position: Charlie Marusiak - The redshirt sophomore tied Kim at the last tournament, the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational, with a 2-over 146. This will be his fourth competition as a Bronco averaging 74.6 strokes per round. 

No. 3 Position: Scott Spiewak - The junior is the only Bronco to play in all six competitions this year. He is coming off a 53rd-place finish at Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational with a 11-over 155. The JC transfer’s top performance as a Bronco was last fall at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate where he finished 12th with a 2-over 215. He currently averages 74 strokes per round.
 
No. 4 Position: Chris Byrne - The junior from Boise is playing in his first event of the spring after seeing action in three tournaments last fall. He enters the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate averaging 75.3 strokes per round.

No. 5 Position: Taylor Porter -
Porter, a native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, is playing in his fourth competition as a Bronco after transferring to Boise State last summer. He recorded a 15-over 159 at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational two weeks ago. Porter enters this tournament averaging 75.1 strokes per round.
