Boise State takes Fourth at Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational...
ST. GEORGE, Utah (2/9/2010) - Boise State University’s men’s golf team carded a six-over 294 in the final round of the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational Tuesday afternoon to place fourth out of 11 teams in the 36-hole tournament in St. George, Utah. Freshmen Taeksoo Kim and Clayton Kosanovich fired one-under 71s today to lead the Broncos overall by tying for eighth place. This was the first competition of the spring season for Boise State who will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to the ReBath Snowman Invitational in Mesa, Ariz.
The Broncos were consistent at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational carding six-over 294s in both rounds of the competition to finish at 12-over 588. They entered Tuesday’s final round in a three-way tie for third place with Utah State and UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City) four strokes out of first place. This afternoon Boise State recorded the fourth-best round of the day which saw them pass yesterday’s leader Southern Utah who self destructed today. Unfortunately for the Broncos, UMKC shave four strokes off their first round total to place second with a 8-over 584, while Western Illinois leaped over Boise State to take third by one stroke with an 11-over 587. WAC rival Utah State placed fifth after turning in a 7-over 295 today for a final score of 589 (+13).
On the individual side of the competition the Broncos saw their roster flip from yesterday’s results. During round one freshmen Taeksoo Kim and Clayton Kosanovich finished tied for fourth on the Boise State team finishing in a tie for 27th with 3-over 75s. Today they passed the other three team members to record the top-Boise State overall scores after carding 1-under 71s in the second round to finish in a six-way tie for eighth place with 2-over 146s.
Senior Robbie Richards finished two strokes back of the freshmen with a 4-over 148. He shot a 1-over yesterday and a 3-over 75 this afternoon to tie for 17th.
Richards, junior Joey Lovell, and sophomore Blake Brown were in an eight-way tie for 10th after yesterday’s opening 18. However, Lovell and Brown dropped off a bit today. After carding a 1-over 73 in the first round Lovell tallied a 5-over 77 this afternoon for a final event score of 6-over 150 placing tied for 24th. Meanwhile, Brown turned in a 7-over 79 for today’s second 18 giving him a final tally of 8-over 152 to finish in a seven-way tie for 35th.
College of Charleston’s Harrison Moore won the individual title after carding the only round in the 60s in the tournament. He fired a 4-under 68 today for a championship total of 6-under 138.
