Boise State Men's Golf Battles Severe Weather Conditions in Spring Opener at Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational?

John Baranco leads Broncos tied for 12th place with one-over-par 73.

ST. GEORGE, Utah (2/9/09) The Boise State men’s golf team opened the spring portion of their schedule at the fifth annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational this morning in St. George, Utah, hosted by Southern Utah University. After day one the Broncos find themselves in 10th place out of 14 teams with a team score of 313 (+25).

Participants battled severe weather conditions that ranged from heavy rain to a snow storm which eventually forced stoppage of play delaying the opening round two hours before competition resumed. In addition to the conditions, the Broncos had to battle through the loss of senior standout Scott Loewen who withdrew from the tournament with injury. As a result, Boise State struggled through the first round finishing  22 shots behind the tournament leaders Southern Utah and San Jose State who each completed the first 18 holes with a three-over-par 291 at Sunbrook Golf Course.

Junior John Baranco led Boise State on day one finishing the opening round in a three-way tie for 12th place with a one-over-par 73. He is four strokes behind current leader Nick Ellis from Washington State who shot a three-under-par 69.

Rounding out the Bronco roster was freshman Blake Brown who struggled during the first nine holes before rallying on the back nine to finish the day with a four-over-par 76 tying for 27th place. Junior Robbie Richards followed with a seven-over-par 79, while sophomore Chris Byrne carded an 85 (+13).

The Broncos will return to action Tuesday morning as they try to climb back up the team rankings. They enter the day knowing that only sixteen strokes separate Boise State from third place Cal State Northridge and the University of Denver who finished day one at 297.  Note, the tournament was originally scheduled for two rounds of 18 holes each with the opening round on Monday and the final scheduled for Tuesday morning.
