Boise State Travels to Utah

What’s Happening The Boise State University men’s golf team will travel to St. George, Utah, Feb. 10, to compete in a double dual-match with Colorado State and Denver University.

Following a one-day hiatus the Broncos will begin the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational on Feb. 12-13. The tournament will be hosted by Southern Utah University at the 36-hole, par 72, 6,758 yard Sunbrook Golf Course at St. George, Utah.

The Field The 17-team field at the Thunderbird Invitational will feature Boise State, Jacksonville, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Oral Roberts, Colorado State, Denver, Idaho State, Portland, Washington State, San Francisco, Utah State, Utah, Dixie State, Nevada, Grand Canyon and Southern Utah.

The Players The Boise State golf team will send juniors Scott Loewen, Troy Merritt and Matt Hastings along with freshmen Shawn Tonkin and Robbie Richards.

Loewen enters the dual match averaging 76.6 strokes per round. He participated in three fall tournaments while registering a low round of 72 (E) at the Vandal Classic.

During fall play, Merritt shot a school-record 62 (-9), en route to tying for first place at the District VII Shootout. Merritt collected four top 25 appearances and two top 10 finishes to average 72.0 shots per round in the fall.

Hastings recorded two top 25 finishes during the fall to move into 10th place on the Boise State all-time list with 12 in his career. He averaged 73.5 shots per round during the fall and fired a career best round of 67 at the Purple and Red Invitational.

Tonkin competed in five fall tournaments including tying for 24th at the District VII Shootout

Richards played in the Purple and Red Invitational along with the Vandal Classic to accumulate a 81.5 scoring average.
