SERIES HISTORY: The Broncos and Sun Devils have previously met just once on the gridiron, with then-No. 5 Arizona State winning 56-7 in Tempe, Ariz., Oct. 5, 1996. Boise State boasts a three-game winning streak over teams from the Pac-12, defeating a ranked Oregon squad in both 2008 (37-32) and 2009 (19-8), and No. 24 Oregon State in 2010 (37-24).
BRONCO SENIOR CLASS: This year’s group of Boise State seniors are already the 10th-consecutive class to win 40-or-more games during their careers. With a win over Arizona State, the 2011 class will have won 50 games, surpassing the school record set by the 2009 class (49).
SIX-STRAIGHT WITH 10: The Broncos have recorded 10 wins for the sixth-consecutive season, tied for the longest active streak in the country (Virginia Tech). Only Boise State, Virginia Tech and Ohio State entered 2011 with five-straight 10-win seasons.
AMONG THE WINNINGEST: Boise State is 376-146-2 as an FBS program, a mark that ranks third on the NCAA’s all-time winningest teams list (.7195). The Broncos have passed Oklahoma (820-307-53; .7174), Ohio State (837-315-53; .7166) and Texas (857-330-33; .7166) this season.
PREMIER PROTECTION: After ranking third-nationally last season in sacks allowed (0.62 per game), the Broncos allowed just eight in the regular season - tied for the fewest nationally. Opponents are averaging 0.67 sacks per game, tied for first-nationally.
SUCCESS AT THE HELM: Boise State head coach Chris Petersen’s record of 72-6 (.923) over the last five-plus seasons with the Broncos gives him the best winning percentage amongst active coaches in all of the Football Bowl Subdivision. The 72 victories also move him past Tony Knapp (71-19-1; 1968-75) for the most wins by a Bronco head coach since Boise State became a four-year institution prior to the 1968 season.
Petersen’s 61 wins from 2006-10 are the third-most by a head coach in his first five seasons in NCAA history, and the most since George Woodruff went 67-5 during his first five seasons at Penn from 1892-96. Walter Camp owns the record, going 69-2-2 from 1888-92 with Yale and Stanford.
WITH TIME TO PREPARE: Under head coach Chris Petersen, Boise State is 22-2 when it has 10-or-more days between games (including season openers).
