Ajayi An Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Finalist
Dec. 11, 2014

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State running back Jay Ajayi has been named a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the award's committee announced Thursday afternoon.

Ajayi, from Plano, Texas, is joined among the finalists by quarterbacks J.T. Barrett (Ohio State), Trevone Boykin (TCU) and Bryce Petty (Baylor) along with running back Samaje Perine (Oklahoma). The five finalists will be brought to Tyler, Texas, for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards Banquet, scheduled for Jan. 14, 2015.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is in its second year, and is given to the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.

The nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year college.

Earlier Thursday Ajayi earned the first All-America honor of his career, being named to USA TODAY Sports' second team.

Ajayi has enjoyed one of the top seasons of any running back in the country in 2014. Heading into the bowl season he leads the FBS with 325 carries, ranks second with 2,225 all-purpose yards (171.2 yards per game) and fourth with 1,689 rushing yards. Ajayi, who has additionally made himself a threat outside of the backfield with 45 receptions for 536 yards, is also tied atop the FBS with 29 touchdowns (25 rushing, four receiving) and 174 points.

His numbers have also put him at or near the top of multiple single-season records in the Boise State annals. He has already set the benchmarks for carries and all-purpose yards, while his total of 25 rushing touchdowns is tied for second with Ian Johnson (2006) and just one behind Brock Forsey's record of 26 set in 2002.

Ajayi was named to the All-Mountain West First Team Dec. 2 and is the only three-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week in 2014 (Sept. 8, Sept. 21, Dec. 1). This year Ajayi posted a pair of 200-yards-or-more performances as well as nine efforts of at least 100 yards, including seven in a row during Boise State's current eight-game winning streak.

Seven times over Boise State's 13 games this season Ajayi has scored at least three touchdowns, capped by a career-best and school-record-tying five touchdowns in Nov. 29's 50-19 win over Utah State.

Mountain West champion Boise State will take on No. 10 Arizona in the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. MT at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
