BOISE, Idaho Boise State University Director of Athletics Gene Bleymaier has announced that the Bronco football team has accepted an invitation to play East Carolina University in the 2007 Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl on December 23 (Sunday). The game will be broadcast by ESPN and is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. (HT).

The Broncos are ranked 24th in the final Bowl Championship Series and will bring an overall record of 10-2 into the game. Boise State, who finished second in the Western Athletic Conference this year with a 7-1 mark, is also ranked 22nd in the USA Today Coaches and Harris Interactive polls, and 24th in the Associated Press media poll.

East Carolina, located in Greenville, North Carolina, brings an overall record of 7-5 into the game, and tied for second place in the Conference USA East Division with a 6-2 mark. East Carolina is unranked.

Boise State will be making its sixth straight post-season bowl appearance, and it’s eighth in the past nine years. The Broncos faced the University of Oklahoma in last year’s Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and handed the Sooners a 43-42 overtime loss to finish the season undefeated at 13-0.

This will also be the fifth different post-season bowl game Boise State has played in the last nine years. The Broncos have played in the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho four times (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2005); the PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas (2003); the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee (2004); and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona (2007).

The Pirates will be making their 14th overall bowl appearance, and the fourth since 2000. Last year East Carolina played in the Papajohns.com Bowl losing to South Florida, 24-7.

Boise State head football coach Chris Petersen will hold a press conference tomorrow (Dec. 3) beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Allen Noble Hall of Fame to speak about the bowl matchup for the Broncos.
