BOISE, Idaho – Redshirt senior safety Darian Thompson was named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced Monday.

Thompson is one of 16 semifinalists for the honor, as well as the only remaining candidate from the Mountain West and one of just three from a non-Resource Five school. Northern Illinois’ Shawun Lurry (MAC) and Houston’s Adrian McDonald (AAC) are the others.

The three Thorpe Award finalists will be named on Monday, November 23rd and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN on December 10. The winner of the 2015 Thorpe Award will be honored at a banquet in Oklahoma City on February 2, 2016.

Thompson, a CBSSports.com second-team All-American and first-team All-Mountain West selection last season, has four interceptions so far in 2015 with three pass breakups and leads Boise State with 49 tackles (26 solo). His four interceptions are tied for the ninth-most in the country, just three behind Lurry for the national lead.

He also has 18 interceptions in his career a figure that is tied for the most in Mountain West history with Eric Weddle. Thompson pulled into that tie with Weddle Oct. 10 at Colorado State, when he intercepted a Coleman Key pass in the first quarter of Boise State’s 41-10 win. The pick also tied him for third-best in Boise State history with Gabe Franklin (2001-04).

Thompson has also made his presence felt coming forward to the line of scrimmage, as in addition to his team-leading 49 tackles he has made four tackles-for-loss including a sack.

This past summer, Thompson was named to the preseason watch lists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy in addition to the Jim Thorpe Award.
