BOISE, Idaho -- Boise State University picked up its fifth and sixth Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week football awards for the 2008 season following its 27-7 win over the University of Hawai’i this past Friday (Oct. 17) with Brandyn Thompson receiving the defensive honor and Kyle Brotzman the special teams award.

A sophomore cornerback from Elk Grove, Calif., Thompson picked up his first career honor when he intercepted three passes and made five unassisted tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of three yards.  Thompson now has four interceptions on the season and is fourth in the country and second in the WAC for interceptions per game at 0.67.  His other interception came at the University of Oregon.

Thompson is fifth on the team in total tackles this year with 28, and has made four tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 10 yards.  He also has two pass breakups.

Brotzman won the specials team award for the second straight week, and the fifth time in his career.  The sophomore from Meridian, Idaho averaged 60.0 yards on three punts, made two (31 and 43) of four field goal attempts and was successful on all three extra point kicks to run his school record of consecutive makes to 90.  One of his punts went for a career long 75 yards, with two of the punts being downed inside the 20-yard line.

His other award to 2008 came following the Southern Miss. game when he made a 32-yard field, all three of his extra points and averaged 39.7 yards on six punts.  He received player of the week honors three times as a freshman in 2007 following games against the University of Nevada, Fresno State and Hawai’i.

Quarterback Kellen Moore has two offensive player of the week awards so far this season (Oregon and Louisiana Tech), while Jeron Johnson won the defensive award following Boise State’s win against Bowling Green State University.

The Broncos are in action this Friday (Oct. 24) at San Jose State in a game to determine the outright leader in the league standings.  Boise State is 2-0 in the WAC, while the Spartans are 3-0.  Kickoff is at 6:01 p.m. (PT) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
