BOISE, Idaho The first Bowl Championship Series standings of the 2008 season were announced today (Sunday, Oct. 19) and Boise State University is ranked 12th with an undefeated record of 7-0.
Boise State has an average score of .5807 following its 13th place ranking in this week’s USA Today Coaches and the Harris Interactive polls, and an average rank in the computer rankings of nine. The Broncos are also ranked 13th in this week’s Associated Press poll, but the media poll does not count in the BCS standings.
The University of Texas is number one with a BCS average of .9979. The Longhorns are ranked No. 1 in both polls and the computer rankings.
The University of Alabama is second at .9487 following by Penn State at .8666, the University of Oklahoma at .8319 and the USC Trojans fifth at .7751.
Boise State is the second highest non-BCS league team in the standings. The University of Utah from the Mountain West Conference is one spot ahead of the Broncos at 11th with an average of .6345.
The 12th place ranking is a key position for non-BCS teams. To automatically qualify for a BCS Bowl from a non-BCS league; a team must be ranked in the final BCS standings which will be announced on Dec. 7 (Sunday).
When Boise State qualified for the 2007 Fiesta Bowl at the end of the 2006 regular season, the Broncos were ranked eighth.
Boise State is back in action this Friday (Oct. 24) when it travels to San Jose State for a 6:01 p.m. (PT) Western Athletic Conference game. The Broncos (2-0) and Spartans (3-0) are the only remaining teams in the WAC that are undefeated in league games this season. The game will be broadcast nationally by ESPN2.
